An introduction to the field

The term ‘archaeology' is derived from the Greek term ‘arkhaiologia' which means discussing old matters. In simple terms, archaeology is the science of studying mankind's history based on the tangible remains. Archaeology is also a set of methods for obtaining information about mankind's past and recreating cultural and materialistic trends of the past. In the United States, archaeology is a subfield of anthropology; a branch of science that investigates and studies different physical, cultural, linguistic and historical aspects of mankind. The difference between anthropology and archaeology is that archaeology only deals with the study of human communities and extinct cultures, and attempts to recreate their diverse existential aspects which covers a very broad range.
